Lot 606

Canada, 1870, 3¢ copper red (37b), horizontal pair barely tied on cover from Vankleek Hill, Ont. to Red Wing, Minn. by a perfectly struck blue negative "VANKLEEEK HILL/U.C." crown seal, postmarked matching blue Vankleek Hill broken circle, May 23, 1870; a bit worn and soiled, especially on the reverse, but a gorgeous cancel and the only one known on cover.
Estimate 750 - 1,000

All post offices were supplied with brass seals for sealing mailbags and bundles with wax. Occasionally they were employed as cancelling devices but when so used were usually blurred and often unrecognizable. The Vankleek seal on this cover is truly exceptional.
