(Clark, George Rogers) (1752-1818), Organized and led frontiersmen against Indians, fought Indians and British in Northwest Territory (Illinois, Indiana) & Kentucky. 8 x 6½ partly-printed DS signed by S. Carr of the Virginia Land Office Treasury, Jan. 29, 1780, to the principal surveyor of any county within the Commonwealth of Virginia. Authorization for a survey of 560 acres of land for Clark, his heirs or assigns, for recruiting his battalion & in lieu of the bounty of 750 dollars and in consideration for £224 paid to the Treasury. Governor Thomas Jefferson is said to have personally given Clark 300 of these warrants to induce men to enlist in the fight against the British and Indians in the northwest Territory.
