Hawthorne, Nathaniel (1804-1864), American writer, wrote The Scarlet Letter, The House of Seven Gables, etc. 4 x 7 partly-printed DS completed in another hand while Surveyor for the Port of Salem, Mass., April 3, 1848, orders articles on a brig bound for Africa to be inspected, signed also by the port collector, naval officer and the inspector with Hawthorne's signature in red ink.
