Castro, Fidel (1927-), Cuban revolutionary, head of state since 1960. Two ALSs in Spanish from Sierra Maestra while battling Batista's Army, both to Pedro Luis Diaz (who would head Cuba's Air Force before defecting to the U.S. ca. 1962) and both signed "Fidel". 1.) Sept. 16, 1958, 4 ¾ x 3 ½ notepaper, 4pp. Castro tells Diaz he has received a message from "Zoilo" regarding shipment of anti-tank and machine guns and ammunition and 17 rifles and information received from "Osvaldo" which may have been lost. Castro has detached people to search for the weapons and flight charts thrown from the airplane have been found and were taken as a clue to start the search. Folds. 2.) Sept. 22, 1958 6 x 4 notebook sheet, 2pp, regarding the length of a landing field south-west of Cienaguilla to which could come a plane "exactly like the one destroyed". Castro is on his way to Las Vegas, hopes to see him before he leaves, has 10,000 pesos he wants to send with Diaz. Small piece missing at top center when ripped from notebook. Exceptional content.
