Applied to letters posted aboard ships carrying mail under contract between New York and San Francisco, this was intended for the Atlantic & Carribean portion of the journey, an appropriate mate to the more familiar (though still rare) Pan & San Fran. S.S. postmark (see next lot). Although undated, this undoubtedly was placed aboard the USMSS Georgia, which arrived in Chagres July 24, 1850. One of the key maritime markings of the Gold Rush period.
