1847, 5¢ red brown (1), full to large margins, wonderful bright color and sharp impression, tied by enormous manuscript. "X" on buff envelope to Lexington Va. with neat strike of blue "Fincastle Va. Jun. 14" c.d.s. and matching Fancy Large "5" at right; stamp with light horizontal file fold, otherwise Very Fine, a beautiful cover.

THE ONLY RECORDED 1847 COVER FROM FINCASTLE.

Fincastle received no supplies of either denomination. The hollow rate marking with shaded outline is well known to Virginia and stampless students alike, but even similar markings are unknown with the 1847 issue.
