Lot 1076

1847, 10¢ black (2), full to large margins, superb impression on fresh paper, neat red grid, matching "Richmond Va. May 6" c.d.s. with Hanging "5" at bottom, on 1849 folded letter to the Winthrop House in Boston, Very Fine, scarce and attractive.
Estimate 2,000 - 3,000

Expertization: 2000 P.F. Certificate.

The so-called "hanging" 5 and 10 postmarks provided a challenge to the Richmond clerks when handling letters with stamps. On those covers they usually succeeded in striking the townmark close enough to the cover's edge as to eliminate the numeral's appearance. The Richmond covers offered here are not only the exception, but the use of the 5 rate with the 10¢ stamp is incorrect, not to mention rare (only two believed known).
