Douglass, the famed African-American abolitionist and former slave, later became an advisor to President Lincoln and an unsuccessful vice-presidential candidate (1872). In 1877, while serving as police commissioner of the District of Columbia, President Hayes appointed him U.S. Marshal for the nation's capital.
