New Brunswick 1851, 1s bright red violet (3), warm color and characteristic wooly impression, large even margins, tied by oval grid and "Express Mail/St. John/Jul. 27" c.d.s. (with another sharp strike repeated at lower left of cover) on 1853 folded letter sheet to New York "p. 'Admiral'" showing handstruck Paid and "20" in red adjacent, backstamped "St. John New Brunswick" (July 27), addressee's name excised and neatly rewritten (the "20" handstamp therefore also partly painted in), the stamp is Extremely Fine and the cover of great visual appeal, an outstanding cross border single franking paying the double rate.
