THE 20¢ SAN FRANCISCO FIRST DAY COVER RANKS AMONG THE RAREST OF THE MIDDLE VALUES FROM THIS SERIES AND, WITH A BLOCK OF FOUR, THIS COVER IS BELIEVED TO BE UNIQUE.

The reason for the small number of San Francisco FDCs is the city’s distance from the east coast, where most of the servicers were based. The Post Office announced the new 20¢t stamp only three days before its date of issue, leaving little time to get requests for first day cancellations from the east to San Francisco.
