A MOST IMPRESSIVE ASSEMBLAGE —ONE THAT WOULD TAKE YEARS TO DUPLICATE.

In a bankruptcy sale in about 1903, Ernest Schernikow acquired the effects of the Philadelphia Bank Note Company. Among these effects were the original master dies of the essays produced by Toppan, Carpenter & Co. for the 1861 issue. Schernikow apparently sought to recoup part of his reported $10,000 investment by producing proofs of these dies for sale to collectors. Proofs of various stages of the completed dies were printed in up to sixteen colors and on a variety of papers. It is believed that only three of each color were produced.
