1861, 3¢ scarlet (74), well centered and bright with "cancel" of four horizontal pen strokes from the Rothfuchs holding, without gum. Fresh and Very Fine.
Scott $5,000

AN EXEMPLARY EXAMPLE OF THIS RARE STAMP WHICH IS ALMOST NEVER SEEN WELL CENTERED AND SOUND.

Expertization: 1990 P.F. Certificate.

Carl Rothfuchs, a Washington, D.C. stamp dealer, apparently acquired a supply of the 3¢ scarlet from the Post Office Department in 1893 in return for his help with the Columbian Exposition, this according to research by Jerome Wagshal and published in
The Chronicle. Rothfuchs "cancelled" all his copies with four pen strokes and sold them with original gum. Previously, sometime in the 1870s, J.W. Scott, founder of the Scott Stamp & Coin Co., had also obtained a supply of the 3¢ scarlet. Mint examples, as well as a few with New York Station D cancels, are from Scott’s holding.
