1898 (10 June) "China" diagonal overprint, 10pf stationery card from the Second Officer of the "S.S. Sachsen" to the North German Lloyd Pier in Hoboken, New Jersey via Vancouver (29.6), bearing "China" diagonal overprint 3pf yellow brown and 5pf bluish green (Michel 1Ib, 2I), cancelled by "Shanghai" c.d.s., Very Fine and one of the pre-eminent rarities of the German Colonies.

THE CHINA 1IB IS CONSIDERED TO BE THE MOST IMPORTANT RARITY OF GERMAN COLONIAL PHILATELY.

Amongst other things, the sender writes "Beim Empfang der neuen Marken mit Ueberdruck für das Gebiet von Shanghai, Kiautschou usf" (referring to the receipt of the new overprinted stamps for Shanghai, Kiautschou, etc.).

This postcard confirms the date of issue of the 3 pfennig stamp, and this is also the earliest recorded date of use. This is the only known card in private hands with the correct usage during the proper period. There is also a card in the German Postal Museum with two 3 pfennig stamps used in Tsingtau, Kiautschou during this period.
