Expertization: signed Friedemann.

The Steamer "König" replaced the Woermann ship in November, 1901, on the return trip to Hamburg. The "König" reached Swakopmund on the eastern round trip on 12 December and took on 171 soldiers homeward bound. The ship was delayed and Christmas was spent at sea. Hamburg was not reached until 7 January 1902. The ship's steward Meiling endorsed 57 cards "Porto cassirt" (postage paid in cash) as an emergency measure since there were no stamps aboard the ship. Once in Hamburg, Meiling gave the post office the equivalent of 57 examples of 10 pfennig stamps (the postal rate for each card) in cash to justify this postal emergency.
