1834 (May 9) to Massilon, Ohio, folded letter bearing very fine strike of red C1 c.d.s. with red manuscript "10" rating, accompanied by 1840 (Jun. 30) folded letter to Akron, Ohio bearing red C1 c.d.s. and matching "Paid" h.s. with red ms. "10" rating for 30-80 miles, "1 chge 73" endorsement for payment by charge account; Fine, the first letter is the earliest recorded example of a Cleveland c.d.s.

The Cleveland C1 circular datestamp was made of boxwood probably provided by the postmaster, not the post office. The C2-C8 circular datestamps were provided by the Post Office and made of metal.
