[To Puerto Rico] 1870, 6¢ carmine (148), used with 12¢ dull purple (151), cancelled by "Witch's hoofmark", matching geometric corks on 1872 yellow cover to Porto Rico at the 18¢ British mail rate via St. Thomas, "Bucksport Me. May 8" c.d.s., red May 16 exchange c.d.s., "St. Thomas MY 23 72" transit backstamp; right edge of cover restored and stamps replaced improperly; Very Fine appearance. Estimate $400 - 500
This cancellation was most likely inspired by the story of an early resident of Bucksport Maine, Colonel Jonathan Buck, who according to legend, burned a witch, whose leg rolled out of the fire. Her foot or its print continues to haunt the town to this day.
