Circular Geometric (Weiss GE-C7), two strikes tie two 10¢ brown (161) singles, deep rich color, one nat. s.e., on 1874 cover with preprinted address to Amsterdam, Holland, endorsed "Per 'Mosel' ", red "New York Supplementary Mail May 16" type D c.d.s. and matching champhered "P.D." handstamp and red crayon "6" and "5", red London (5.27) transit with matching circular "PD" h.s., Amsterdam (5.28.74) arrival backstamp; minor edge flaws, Very Fine and striking use.

A RARE SUPPLEMENTARY MAIL USE TO HOLLAND, ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED GE-C7 SUPPLMENTARY MAIL USES.

The 20¢ postage prepays the 10¢ Netherlands closed mail rate via England plus 10¢ supplementary mail fee. Carried on NGL Line "Mosel" that arrived at Southampton on May 26, 1874. The champhered "PD" marking is very rare and was applied by New York City and is only recorded used in combination with the supplementary mail type D exchange datestamp, which lacks a "paid direct" designation as required per treaty.
