Envelope, 1853, 3¢ red, die 1 (U1), used entire, size 7, knife 2, watermark 1 in rare original configuration on horizontally laid paper, deep rich color and "Nesbitt" seal on flap, cancelled by "Indianapolis, Ind., 3 Paid, Dec 6" c.d.s. and addressed to Millbury, Mass., light fold and some slight edgewear, small piece out of back, still Very Fine and rare. UPSS 2.

There are fewer than 50 recorded examples of the rare original watermark configuration on horizontally laid paper (only found on white paper), the two rows of letters have space between them. The common revised watermark configuration on diagonally laid paper has two rows of letters that touch each other. Accompanied by Linns article on early envelopes.
