Presidential Assistance to a Soldier, folded soldier's letter postmarked Pekin, Ill., Apr 24, 1862 and handstamped "Free" to "The Hon. Prest. Lincoln", summarized for the president on the reverse by Lincoln's secretary, Jonathan Nicolay, "Formerly a clerk in Col. Logan's Regt. states that he was wounded at Ft. Donelson; asks for passage to Europe to rejoin his parents; has received no pay for six months & is compelled to ask for assistance. May 7th 1862". Referred to Paymaster General who has penciled reply on bottom, "you will receive your pay - funds have been sent to pay off your Regiment - "; some toning, Fine.
