After winning battles in Grant's Mississippi campaign, Samuel P. Lee, took command of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron. He was the brother of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The Minnesota was seriously damaged in the Monitor-Merrimac battle in 1863.
