(FX-NY1a (iii)), on 1894 cover from Apia, Samoa to London, England, locally franked with Samoa ½d brown violet & 5d on 4d blue (9c, 22) tied Apia c.d.s., Aug 1, 1894, two different registered handstamps, U.S. 3¢ purple & 10¢ green (221, 226) tied by indistinct San Francisco ovals with magenta Aug 21 San Francisco registry postmark, readdressed from London to Richmond, several transit handstamps, front and back. All stamps were applied in Samoa, which was not yet a member of the U.P.U. The Samoan stamps paid the local registry fee and postage to the U.S., while the U.S stamps paid the U.S. 8¢ registry fee and the 5¢ U.P.U. letter rate. This was the last mail requiring mixed franking prior to Samoa's admission to the U.P.U.
