Lot 158
Danville, Va., 1861, 5¢ black on dark buff (21XU3), printed frank with curved "SOUTHERN" on a deep buff envelope locally addressed and likely hand delivered with no Danville postal markings; reduced somewhat on three sides and slightly refolded. Otherwise Fine. Dark area indicating a previous adhesive stamp in the upper right corner explained as having come from the Paul Freeland collection where stamps that had been applied by an oldtime dealer, as "enhancements", had been removed. Scott $7,000 for normal used
Expertization: with a 1996 P.S.E. certificate as repaired and refolded but declining opinion as to whether it was postally used.
