Canada, 1852, 3d red, vertical strip of four (4), tied by target cancels on blue folded cover from Quebec to Saint John, N.B., postmarked red Quebec broken circle May 31, 1853, with manuscript "Money Letter" but no handstamp, backstamped Woodstock, N.B. June 7 and St. John June 8; strip has three margins, though close at right, and is just touching at the top, a Fine quadruple rate cover. The only recorded example of this franking and this rate to New Brunswick.
Estimate 7,500 - 10,000

Provenance: Nickle

New Brunswick initiated its own registered mail system in July of 1852 and most of their registered letters were enclosed in green wrapper-receipts and received no backstamps. The fact that this cover bears backstamps of two different New Brunswick cities strongly suggests that it was handled as ordinary mail.

Canada, 1852, 3d red (4), four mostly large margins, barely tied by target cancel on folded letter from Montreal to Huntingdon, L.C., postmarked Montreal broken circle, Feb 9, 1855, endorsed by sender "Money Letter of T. Nye of 7th Feby '55'" minor separation along inner folds, Fine.
Estimate 400 - 500

Because of the absence of any postal markings other than the Montreal postmark; not even a written letter bill number, it seems likely that the letter was handled as ordinary mail, despite the fact that enclosed was £10 for payroll at a lumber camp.

Canada, Transatlatic Money Letter to Scotland, greenish blue folded letter from St. Mary's-Blanchard, C.W. to Coldstream, Scotland, postmarked bright red St. Mary's-Blanchard broken circle with manuscript date "27 Fey/49", two strikes red straight line "MONEY LETTER" with manuscript "½ paid ¼" rate (expressed in both sterling and currency), backstamped red Beachville March 6 and Montreal March 12, upon arrival in Liverpool it was marked red manuscript "Registered" and handstamped "MORE to PAY" with manuscript "6" and additional backstamps at Liverpool Apr 3 and Berwick and Coldstream, both on April 4; Very Fine.
Estimate 400 - 500

After 1841 Canadian Money Letters received in the U.K. were treated as registered mail and charged 6d, the British registry fee. Since this rate could not be prepaid in Canada the fee was collected from the addressee. The writer, one Jane Oliver, added a postscript to the letter stating "I have marked this letter Money although there is none in it, having been told that there was a great chance of it going safe." She probably didn't realize that the recipient would have to pay 6d as a result of her clever ploy.

Canada, Green Money Letter Wrapper-Receipt from Hamilton to Scotland, mailed from Hamilton, C.W. to the postmaster at Rosemarkee by Fortrose, Rosskeen, Scotland, postmarked red Hamilton broken circle, March 26, 1851, and red straight line "PAID" with red manuscript rate "2/4" (sterling) and "2/7½" (currency), backstamped Montreal March 31, Liverpool April 21, and Fortrose April 23 because Canadian money letters were treated as registered mail in the U.L. the wrapper was marked with a manuscript "6"(d) due upon arrival in Liverpool; a few sealed edge tears but otherwise Very Fine, exceedingly rare and in all probability unique.
Estimate 7,500 - 10,000

The wrapper contained a Money Letter for a Miss M. Fordon care of a Mr. A. MacDonald, Avoch; inside the wrapper the postmaster at Fortrose has twice more stuck his April 23 datestamp. Finally, on April 24th, the postmaster at Avoch filled in the receipt form printed on the inside of the wrapper, applied his undated postmark twice, and had Mr. Alexander sign for the money letter which he presumably delivered to Miss Gordon.

Canada, Earliest Recorded Cross-Border Money Letter, folded cover postmarked Wellington Square (U.C.) rimless c.d.s. with red manuscript date "3rd/Januy/1839" and matching manuscript "free/A. Bates P.M.", large red "NIAGARA U.C./8/JAN/1830" exchange office c.d.s. lightly struck at lower left with the manuscript U.S. rate changed from "18¾" to "37½" due upon discovering that the letter contained an enclosure; small portion of address leaf missing at upper left, Fine and scarce.
Estimate 400 - 500

There was no Money Letter service in the U.S. Canadian postage to the border was required but prepayment of U.S. postage was option. In this case the Wellington Square postmaster's free frank covered the postage to the border but the U.S. postage was marked for collection from the addressee.

Canada, U.S. 1847 5¢ brown (1) (1), two singles, the first with three margins and cut in at bottom, the second, which is a replacement for the lost original, has nearly four margins, pen-cancelled on folded letter from Quebec to New York, postmarked red Quebec broken circle, Feb 12, 1849, and crowned circle "PAID/AT/QUEBEC, L.C." with manuscript "Money", "paid to the lines No 94", and red "11½" (11½d being the single rate for 201-300 miles, charged to box 94), with the latter tying the original 5¢ backstamped at Montreal Feb 14, the blue ink used to cancel the original 5¢ stamp (the replacement is cancelled in black) was also used to line out the "Paid" in the Paid at Quebec marking, this was probably done in New York and is the only U.S. marking. Very Fine.
Estimate 1,000 - 1,500

Until May of 1849 Canadian postage could only be paid to the border. Postage for delivery in the U.S. could not be prepaid in cash. Therefore, the only way to avoid postage due charges to the recipient was to apply U.S. stamps prior to mailing. Two 5¢ stamps paid the U.S. rate for over 300 miles.
