China, 1886 (Nov. 29) cover from Newington, Conn. to "Pekin, China," missent to Perkins, California, franked with 2¢ brown at domestic rate only, ornamental "Held for/Postage" handstamp applied at San Francisco once envelope posted on to its proper destination, over which 1¢ and 2¢ affixed by the postmaster to make up proper postage ("Short Paid- Deficit 3 Cents/Paid by Wm. Dougherty, Asst./P.M. San Francisco" handstamp in violet on reverse), oval "U.S. Postal Agency/Shanghai" date stamp in violet and "Customs/Shanghai" c.d.s. on reverse, with extremely fine strike of framed "To Pay" handstamp in red on front applied at Shanghai for domestic postage for mail to Northern China, stamps have some faults, one of only three examples of this handstamp we record on mail originating from the U.S.A.

China, 1904 (Apr. 25) book-size wrapper from Paris to Luchow via Shanghai and Ichang, bearing France Blanc 5c and Sower 30c cancelled by c.d.s. and China "Postage Due" overprints 4c and 10c (2) applied at Chungking and cancelled by c.d.s. which has been overstruck by mute type handstamp to void the Dues, since the recipient refused to pay the additional postage required, the wrapper eventually returned to sender, showing various indicative instructional markings including Chinese-English "Returned/to Writer" handstamp and "Refusé" handstamp, unusual- properly prepaid in France but an additional 24c postage levied in China.

China, 1904 (Sept. 26) cover carried privately from England and posted in Shanghai at the local printed matter rate, ½c cancelled by native c.d.s., showing unframed "T" handstamp and "Shanghai/Local Post" c.d.s. adjacent, endorsed in manuscript "Originated in England L/167" overstruck by oval "District Inspector/Shanghai" date stamp in violet, therefore uprated to unpaid foreign letter with "Postage Due" overprint. ½c, 2c block of four and 10c applied on reverse to make up the 19 cents rate (9½c postage plus the equivalent in fines for what was considered an attempt to defraud the post office; the original ½c franking being credited toward this), envelope creased in places not affecting the stamps, remarkable usage.

China, 1914 back of cover from USA to Hankow, Postage Due "Republic of China" London overprint 1c brown block of ten and pair applied over Seattle four-line handstamp indicating that the envelope was posted at a rate not corresponding to the destination (i.e., posted at the 3 cents domestic rate and thereby underpaid by 3 cents, hence taxed at full international rate plus penalty) and cancelled by arrival c.d.s., "Shanghai, China, Rec'd./U.S. Postal Agency" transit c.d.s. adjacent.

China, 1942 (July 18) censored cover from Cairo to Shanghai, franked at origin with 2m and 20m, reverse with rare label "This letter has been forwarded from Calcutta to Chungking by airmail owing to the suspension of the ordinary-surface transport-route. An air mail surtax…has therefore to be collected from the addressee on delivery. Continuation of this arrangement will depend on continued public support", and therefore with Postage Due 5¢ 10¢ pair, and 50¢ vertical strip of four applied on arrival (representing airmail surtax of $2.25 per 5 grammes), very rare example of this mandatory tax due to reclassification of mail service in order to circumvent the Japanese blockade.
