Scott $17,000

FEWER THAN 100 EXAMPLES OF THIS RARE INVERT ARE BELIEVED TO EXIST, MOST OF THESE ARE HEAVILY CANCELLED AND FAULTY, IN FACT, THE CATALOGUE VALUE IS FOR A SINGLE WITH FAULTS. THIS EXAMPLE WITH ITS EXCEPTIONAL FRESHNESS, LIGHT CANCEL AND SOUND STATE IS TRULY EXCEPTIONAL.

Expertization: 1990 and 2002 P.F. Certificates.

For a variety of reasons, the overwhelming majority of the 1869 inverts are faulty and/or repaired. As for the 15¢ 1869 invert, out of the 100 or so estimated examples, less than ten have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation as sound. Not only is the present example one of these elite few, it is also one of the most lightly cancelled as well.

The example offered here, with its excellent centering and color, and its complete freedom from faults and repairs is among the five or six best examples of this popular and important error.

The 3¢ 1869 re-issue is the most difficult value of the set to locate truly well centered. After reviewing the many hundreds of examples submitted to the Philatelic Foundation, we found no more than three or four with centering similar to the above example. Given the added qualities of excellent color and freshness, this is arguably the finest mint single in existence.

Scott $2,750

Expertization: 1989 P.F. Certificate.

The 12¢ 1869 re-issue is the most difficult in the set to locate in choice condition. That said, the example offered here is in a class by itself. We found only three or four other examples with centering and margins at all comparable to the stamp. More importantly, however, when we factor in the state of preservation of this example it becomes clear this stamp has no peers. The depth and brilliant aura of the color simply unrivaled, plus the paper and gum condition are outstanding as well. This stamp is our candidate for the finest mint single extant.
