1857, 3¢ plum (11), horizontal strip of four, pos. 42-45R2L, large to mostly huge margins showing parts of eight adjoining stamps, handsome unmistakable color and very fine impression, tied by twice struck "New Orleans La. Mar. 7" pmks. on fresh 1857 quadruple-rated folded cover to New York, Extremely Fine, the largest known multiple of the plum (The only other multiple is an off-cover strip of three, pos. 77-79R2L, used from New Orleans, Mar. 31st, and possibly from the same sheet.) Incredible quality for this rare shade, and its use on a normal size cover something of a miracle, one of the most important 3c 1851 covers in existence, and unquestionably the finest known usage of a Plum. Signed Amonette, and offered for the first time at public auction. (2003 Scott cat. $8,000 as singles, unlisted in a multiple.).

1851-52, 3¢ brownish carmine (11), vertical block of six, large margins to cutting, pen cancllled, on 1856 folded letter to Pa. with ms. "Keswick Octo 31st" pmk., fascinating Va. contents written to a friend and autograph collector with a list of ten addition al letters or documents that were included (thus explaining the six times rate), the last being a copy of a letter from Thomas Nelson Jr. to Col. John Walker: "The undaunted tone of this letter is worthy of note as our state was then overrun by the British- but He was one main instrument in turning the tide against them, & in taking Cornwallis prisoner in his own house at Yorktown."; Fine, a rare and desirable item for the Virginia postal historian. The wife of the writer, Thos. Meriwether, was the granddaughter of Thos. Nelson Jr.

1851, 12¢ black, diagonal bisect (17a), Top left half, large margins, tied by large "Paid" in grid, on light buff cover to San Francisco with matching "Boston 10 Cts 4 Jan." c.d.s. indicating the bisect was not accepted for postage, Very Fine, ve ry rare east coast usage, probably inspired by an incoming cover from San Francisco, where a temporary shortage of 3c stamps made bisects acceptable.

1853, 3¢ red on buff, die 1, illegal "cut-out" (U2), cut to shape and well tied by New York c.d.s. on gray Aug. 8, 1853 printed circularfrom Sheffield, England, a so-called "boot-legged" cover and in effect a double fraud. An early use of a Nesbitt there is no attempt to conceal the use of the Nesbitt- presumably the sender thought this was perfectly acceptable and the post office complied. Very Fine and rare.
