1851, 3¢ orange brown (10), horizontal strip of three, pos. 8-105E, margins to touching at R., rich color, used with 12c black (17), margins to slightly in, tied together by red grids on 1851 folded cover to Lyon, France, red "New-York Aug. 23" c.d.s., ms. "Steamer Humboldt" in corner, ms. "6" decimes due, Havre and Lyon pmks., some tiny natural bleach specks not affecting stamps appearance, still a desirable and Very Fine usage which overpaid the recently introduced 20c American packet rate; it is also a rare early use of the 12c (the earliest on record is a front dated Aug. 4th).

1854-55, 3¢ rose red (11), horizontal blocks of six and eight, margins to slightly in, tied together by black grids on Nov. 1855 folded cover to France paying a double 21c rate by British mail via American packet, red New Orleans and black Calais postmarks. tie l eft block with red "New York Am. Packet Nov. 14" exchange postmark. with inverted month ties right block, manuscript. "24" decimes due at B.; TR stamp with small sealed tear, bottom stamps with mild horizontal. crease, still a Very Fine usage, blocks of the 3c on transatlantic mail are rare and this may be the largest known multiple franking of the 3c on cover.

"75 cen" at TR, Halifax backstamp, Fine, an enormously rare destination and possibly unique with this combination of due markings.

"100" (Dutch cents) due mark on Oct. 1851 folded cover to Schiedam, Holland, red " New-York Oct. 25" c.d.s. and ms. "p. Atlantic", ms. "1/4" British due, red "Art-5/ U.S. Ikt." straightline handstamp, reverse with red British Schiedam datestamps and red "Ongeland/ over Rotterdam" script-style h.s. The sender attempted to pay only the 3c domestic postage- partial payment disregarded, sent via British open mail by American packet, Fine and rare, a highly unusual usage and a very early example from Plate One Late.

"Cannot Be Found", green Birmingham postmarks. dated Jan. 27 & 29th, manuscript. shilling mark struck out, large "Boston 24" dateless circle applied at top left, a Very Fine and rare usage, espeically desirable with this seldom seen railroad corner card.

Jul. 27" c.d.s. on pastel green folded letter to Constantinople, Turkey, sent via Boston's Mission House, and carried out of mails to the U.S. consul in Turkey, clear stri ke of the very rare straightline "CONSPLE. SEP 3" consular datestamp at center, manuscript. "Overland" at top left; cover with some edge splits at bottom and small gum stain opposite stamp, the latter with a small paper irregularity in BR corner, Fine and attractive, a rare usage in this period, particularly with the receiving straightline.

1852, 3¢ dull red (11), margins to slightly in, tied by "Cincinnati O. Jan. 18" c.d.s. on battered cover to a purser aboard the U.S. Brig Bainbridge at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, care of "Robt. Wright & Co. Baltimore Md.", magenta ms. "50" and red "Paid", reverse with ms. "Forwarded by Esliry & Alverys" but no other indication how this was handled- the rate to Brazil was 45c by British packet via England; what the Paid 50 represents is not clear but it did reach its destination: there is a large "Answered" written diagonally across the envelope which has clearly suffered over the years, nevertheless an intriguing usage worthy of further study.
