A Remarkable pair of Transocean covers from San Francisco, two 1851 folded letters, one to London, the other to Bordeaux, postmarked San Francisco on Aug 1, first with red "25" rate handstamp, the other with "22", both being non-existent rates to these countries, yet each is handstamped "Paid", London cover with "19" credit and receiving c.d.s. with integral paid, Bordeaux with British transit and "8" decimes due, Very Fine.

The clerk's confusion may have stemmed from the dramatic changes in the transcontinental rate on July 1, 1851. In addition, the West Coast surcharge on British treaty mail was reduced from 35¢ to 5¢. Sailing from New York on the Collins Atlantic (Bordeaux) to the Cunard Asia (London), the rates should have been 26¢ and 29¢ respectively. Even more remarkable than these anomalies is the survival of two such covers on the same day from two different correspondences.

Carried on PMSS Tennessee, which arrived in Panama on October 16, after which it travelled from Chagres to New York (probably on USMSS Falcon. It left New York on on Oct 30 on the Baltic of the Collins Line, arriving Liverpool on Nov 10.

This was sent by someone who thought only the inland U.S. postage of 6¢ needed to be prepaid; the Grass Valley postmaster agreed but the British correctly marked this for 1sh.2½d (29¢)collect. This appears to be a double 33¢ rate cover via South Hampton with a 3¢ overpayment though the "72" needs to be explained in light of this interpretation. At least one other cover from the correspondence (Ward) show similar disparate notations; a magenta "42" and a pencil "120" (the cover, the same size as this one is franked with $1.20 and appears to be considerably overpaid). The 72 might have simply been the sender's idea of payment. Other Ward covers may reveal the writer's intentions, but on the basis of this cover and the $1.20 franking (Patrick Henry Sale, Lot 1089), it appears as though the sender relied on guesswork.
