1847, 10¢ black (2), four singles arranged in block format, mostly ample to large margins except left stamps and upper right stamp just in at bottom, handsome shade, cancelled or tied together by matching red grids on advertising envelope with imprint at top: "Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company, 151 Market Street, Newark, N.J.", light red "Newark N.J. Jan. 10" c.d.s. at right; cover with few vertical creases well clear of stamps, still Very Fine, a magnificent showpiece. Illustrated in Alexander, p. 323.

This block-like configuration is the closest any collector will ever get to acquiring a block of the 10¢ on cover as none are known.

Apr 19" c.d.s. with manuscript "2 Cents" written inside postmark, on ca. 1849-50 white envelope to New York, additionally there is a light "2c" opposite stamp and a large "5" rate handstamp struck out in pen, Extremely Fine.

Provenance: Seven Oaks

The 2¢ probably represents carrier service to the New Brunswick post office. The scarcity of mail from New Brunswick in this period makes it difficult to ascertain if writing a rate inside the postmark was standard procedure for this office, but study of local newspapers would shed light on whether carrier service operated. Whatever the explanation, this is an intriguing and unique 1847 usage.

What had been the finest pair from the Habersham correspondence was purchased by a dealer several years ago, who then removed the top stamp from the cover to sell as an off-cover single.

Princeton did not receive a supply of 5¢ stamps from Washington but did obtain a quantity from New York City in November 1847.
