Feb. 19" c.d.s., other has large margins to touching two sides, tied by bright red grid, matching Aug. 27th c.d.s. and addressed to Miss Clapp in Black Rock; each cover with tiny edge tear, Very Fine and scarce pair of covers making a most appealing exhibit page.

During the time span of this correspondence the more familiar Binghamton herringbone cancel was supplanted by a gridiron and the occasional pen cancel- this situation provided the basis for a number of clever fakes with the more valuable fancy herringbone added to cleaned or substituted stamps; the end result is that Binghamton covers with grid cancels have become quite scarce.

Jan. 21" c.d.s. on 1849 folded letter to Millard Fillmore, then the state comptroller in Albany, manuscript. "Due 10", docketing in Fillmore's hand, Very Fine usage.

Contents (from a friend, S.G. Haven, writing to Fillmore while waiting in court) indicate this contained an additional three letters, making this a quadruple rate; there is also an amusing reference to Nathan K. Hall, later postmaster general under Fillmore.
Shortly after this letter was sent, Fillmore resigned the comptrollership, having been elected vice president on the Whig Party ticket with General Taylor in November of 1848. The writer of the letter, Solomon Hall, was a partner in the firm of Fillmore, Hall and Haven.
