1847, 5¢ red brown (1), margins to touched top right, tied by red "Way", repeated at top center, on folded cover to the wife of artist Titian Peale in Washington, rare and Very Fine usage.

Expertization: 1996 P.F. Certificate.

From 1849 to 1872, Peale worked as an examiner for the U.S. Patent Office. This marking is usually found on mail from Philadelphia that went by railroad.

1847, 5¢ red brown (1), ample margins, fine impression, tied by red grids, matching "Penn Yan N.Y. 28 Jun" c.d.s. and "Paid" handstamp on 1851 folded letter to New York, large manuscript. "W" written at left indicating "way usage", brief contents with mortgage payment inquiry headed Penn Yan but dated June 23rd, which argues for this having been handed over to someone rather than deposited directly in the Penn Yan post office, received July 1st, the first day of the new stamps, Very Fine, an interesting and unique usage.
