1847, 5¢ red brown (1), large margins to just in at upper right, late impression, tied by bold small black "Paid" in grid and red "Boston 3 cts 6 Sep." c.d.s. on 1851 folded letter to Great Falls, N.H., used more than two months after demonetization and accepted as paid by the Boston office; stamp with light pre-use crease near bottom and tiny tear, Very Fine usage. Illustrated in Alexander, p. 863.

ONE OF ONLY FOUR KNOWN ILLEGAL POST-DEMONETIZATION COVERS ACCEPTED AT BOSTON.

Jun. 19" c.d.s. on ca. 1852-54 cover to San Jose California, second strike of "Paid" at cover's center in addition to a manuscript "6" next to it, being a restatement of the full rate, the 5¢ stamp accepted for postage and 1¢ balance paid in cash; cover repaired and cleaned, additional pen cancel removed from stamp, Very Fine appearance.

1847, 5¢ red brown (1), large margins to cutting at bottom, fine impression, tied by clear blue "Philadelphia Pa. 5 cts. Jun 26" c.d.s. on 1852 folded letter, used one year after demonetization, to Cowdersport Pa.; file folds, Fine and very rare.

ONE OF ONLY FOUR POST-DEMONETIZATION USAGES NOT ACCEPTED AS VALID POSTAGE.
Expertization: 1965 P.F. Certificate.
Provenance: Hart
The postage rates for letters traveling under 3,000 miles after July 1, 1851 were 3¢ for prepaid and 5¢ for unpaid. The use of the c.d.s. with its integral "5 cts" rate, and the fact that the postmark was struck so as to be very clearly show this rate, leave no doubt that the stamp was not accepted as postage.
