o 1920, 2¢ deep rose, type Ia, imperf (482A), well centered for the issue with distinctive color, a neat wavy line machine cancel, and complete Schermack perforations on both sides. Fresh and choice Very Fine. Scott $50,000
A WONDERFUL FRESH AND SOUND EXAMPLE OF THIS GREAT 20TH CENTURY RARITY.
Expertization: 1974, 2002 P.F. certificates.
Provenance: Ballman
The imperforate 2¢ type Ia was printed specifically to fill an order by the Schermack Company, who then applied their distinctive oblong perforations to the entire supply. Most were then dispensed by poorly calibrated vending machines that, more often than not, cut the perforations off on one side or the other.
Because the Bureau gave no advance notice regarding this special printing, collectors were not aware of it until much later. Consequently, virtually none went into the hands of contemporary collectors. Only about 40 examples have been recorded and only a handful of those are nicely centered and sound and have intact perforations on both sides.

1917, 5¢ carmine error, imperf (485), middle stamp in a block of 9. Bright color and large margins. O.g., lightly hinged on a 2¢ with error being never hinged. Couple trivial inclusions on 2¢. Fresh and Extremely Fine. An outstanding example of this key 20th century error. Scott $17,000
Sometime during the life of plate number 7942 being used to print 2¢ Washingtons, it was decided that 3 positions in the plate were so defective that they should be replaced. Accordingly, the siderographer burnished out the 3 faulty positions but inadvertently re-entered them with the transfer roll of the 5¢ value. His error was never noticed and the plate was put back into service to print perf. 10 and perf. 11 2¢ stamps, as well as the much rarer imperfs, of which only 50 sheets are believed to have been issued.
