Lot 1048

1847, 5¢ brown (1), large margins to clear at bottom right, attached by wax wafer and canceled by blue grid, matching "Clinton N.Y. Aug. 20" c.d.s. on 1848 folded letter to Central Square, N.Y., stamp with an additional cancel removed and illegally reused; lettersheet with some bleed through of contents and stamp with crease prior to use, Fine appearance.
Estimate 1,500 - 2,000

ONE OF TWO RECORDED COVERS FROM CLINTON.

Expertization: 1999 P.F. Certificate.

Unless it can be determined that the stamp has never been off its cover, it is sometimes difficult to separate true illegal uses from stamps with additional pen cancel removed for the sake of salability. This example, with use of a wax wafer in the absence of gum, and traces of earlier creasing, effectively confirm its "illegal" status.

Lot 1051

1847, 5¢ red brown (1), large margins at sides, touched at top and bottom, lovely clear shade and fine impression, tied by criss-cross pen cancels on 1848 (ca.) buff envelope to Rochester with blue oval, "Union Hall/Saratoga/Springs" handstamp and "Saratoga Springs NY. Estimate 1,000 - 1,500

ONE OF TWO RECORDED 1847 COVERS WITH THIS HOTEL MARKING.

Provenance: Garrett

Saratoga Springs received no 1847 stamps of either denomination. The town's popularity as a resort must be considered when discussing the number of covers (15) recorded from here- a comparison of shades may determine whether a supply of stamps was obtained from a nearby town. However, a more likely scenario is that stamps were carried by visitors in anticipation of letters to friends. No 10¢ covers are known.

Sing Sing prison, originally called Mount Pleasant State Prison, was built by inmates of Auburn, under the direction of Warden Elam Lynds, and finished in October 1828. The site, near the village of Sing Sing, was chosen for the availability of marble and other stone.
