Nazareth received no 1847 stamps of either denomination. A unique usage of Biblical proportions.

Jul 10" c.d.s., on 1850 (4 July) folded letter from Laredo to St. Louis, long vertical scissors cut into design at left and a vertical filing crease also crosses the stamp, still Fine attractive appearance for this extremely rare usage.

The writer, a Captain in the U.S. Army, complains about the Indians and the heat.

1847, 5¢ red brown (1), full to large margins, wonderful bright color and sharp impression, tied by enormous manuscript. "X" on buff envelope to Lexington Va. with neat strike of blue "Fincastle Va. Jun. 14" c.d.s. and matching Fancy Large "5" at right; stamp with light horizontal file fold, otherwise Very Fine, a beautiful cover.

THE ONLY RECORDED 1847 COVER FROM FINCASTLE.

Fincastle received no supplies of either denomination. The hollow rate marking with shaded outline is well known to Virginia and stampless students alike, but even similar markings are unknown with the 1847 issue.

Expertization: 2000 P.F. Certificate.

The so-called "hanging" 5 and 10 postmarks provided a challenge to the Richmond clerks when handling letters with stamps. On those covers they usually succeeded in striking the townmark close enough to the cover's edge as to eliminate the numeral's appearance. The Richmond covers offered here are not only the exception, but the use of the 5 rate with the 10¢ stamp is incorrect, not to mention rare (only two believed known).
