By making his own envelope the sender obviously took care to protect the glazed envelope which normally would have been used to receive stamps and postmark. It is ironic that the Valentine itself is lost, but the plain brown outer envelope, the most expendable part of the package from the point of view of the recipient, was carefully opened and is not only still in existence but well preserved.

ONE OF THE MOST VISUALLY SPECTACULAR OF THE 10¢ 1847 USAGES.

Provenance: Diamant, Matthies, Paliafito

Considered one of the showpieces of 1847 philately, Lester Brookman chose this item to begin his chapter on the 10¢ 1847 issue in his book, "The United States Postage Stamps of the 19th Century". In the caption of the photo he stated that the cover "may well be the most attractive 1847 cover in existence".

This is the only recorded 10¢ cover from Potsdam (only 100 10¢ stamps were received). Coincidentally, there is a 5¢ pair known from Potsdam on a large Valentine envelope from another correspondence which also has the numerals struck out in pen.
