Office" with light New York postmark at upper left, face with 3c green (157) cancelled by indistinct cork cancel of Bennington Centre Vt., blue crayon "4" local due marking of Hamilton, opened to show both sides, a couple of small edge tears, Fine and rare, a remarkable showpiece. Dec. 29" c.d.s. and bold red "12 New York Dec. 30" c.d.s., indistinct Peru postmark in blue on reverse; 5¢ with small toned spot, Very Fine and rare usage.

In 1876 Prof. Orton began an exploration of the Great Beni River, dying on Sept. 25, 1877 at Lake Titicaca in Peru. As there is no indication of forwarding, this was most likely mailed in 1875, reaching him prior to the start of what would be his final expedition.

A pencil "Dec. 22, 1880" is written on the flap- if this is accurate, then the writer overpaid by 23¢ as the U.P.U. rate came into effect in July of that year.

5¢ Taylor (179), single, used with 3¢ green (158) and tied together by bold double strikes of NYFM cancel GE-EP4 on Jan. 8, 1876 cover to Paris, France, red New York and blue Paq. Fr. Brest postmarks each tie stamp; cover with small mended tear at top and closed spindle hole in third line of address, Very Fine appearance and most unusual combination of stamps- the 5¢ G.P.U. rate had just come into effect, eliminating the 9¢ French mail rate. The only rate this would have paid was double the 4¢ open mail rate by American packet via England, made obsolete 15 months earlier. It is most likely an early misinterpretation of the G.P.U. rate.

5¢ Taylor (185), single cancelled and tied by two strikes of "PM/ London/ 22 De/ 82" c.d.s. on cover with printed address to England, readdressed with label to Seville, Spain, reverse with red London postmark. and purple Brown, Shipley oval, indistinct Spanish marking, tiny Dec. 27th receiving note at lower left; stamp with small tear at top, Very Fine appearance, a remarkable usage. Devoid of U.S. postmarks, without sailing instructions and the stamp uncancelled, it is likely this cover was prepared for mailing in the states, but then carried privately and handed over to Brown, Shipley, who placed it in the British mail system, which treated the cover as fully paid.
