Navy Dept., 1873, 2¢ ultramarine (O36), tied by New York, station "1" duplex cancel, Aug 21 (1883) used to pay postage due on cover franked with 5¢ brown (205), postmarked "Baltimore, Md., 20 Aug" c.d.s., to Ensign W.S. Benson on board the U.S.S. Yantic c/o U.S. Consul St. Johns, Newfoundland, Boston transit c.d.s., Sept 23, marked for postage due and routed to New York and the "U.S. Govt. Despatch Agency, New York" (magenta handstamp) on reverse is a magenta 6-line handstamp beginning "Deficiency in Postage supplied by U.S Gov't Despatch Agency…" advising the recipient to have the sender inquire of his local postmaster the correct rate; St Johns receiver, Aug 29; the 5¢ Garfield has a faulty corner, the 2¢ Navy has perforation flaws and small nick, otherwise Very Fine, the 2¢ Navy made up the 7¢ treaty rate to Newfoundland.

Navy Dept., 1873, 2¢ ultramarine (O36), tied by separated cork cancel, "Washington, D.C., Feb 7" c.d.s., used to make up the 5¢ U.P.U. rate on a twice-forwarded cover overseas; originally addressed to a U.S. Marine on station in Norfolk, Va. with a 3¢ green (158) tied by light ultramarine cancel, an illegible matching postmark alongside; the cover was returned to the Navy Dept. in Washington where the 2¢ Navy was added and the cover was forwarded to London, England in care of B.F. Stevens, the U.S. Despatch Agent, at Charing Cross; Stevens then forwarded the cover to the addressee in Villefranche s/Mer, France; backstamped London and Villefrance c.d.s.s and red B.F. Stevens oval, the 2¢ Navy is also tied by a clear Charing Cross c.d.s.; minor toning 3¢ stamp, Very Fine.

Navy Dept., 1873, 2¢ ultramarine (O36), tied by fancy cork cancel, "Washington, D.C., Mar 20" c.d.s., on legal size obsolete free frank cover to Yokohama, Japan, printed Naval Bureau of Provisions and Clothing indicia, addressed to the Navy Asst. Paymaster, Asiatic Station, in Yokohama; vertical file fold at left, fingerprints, apparently from cancelling ink at right, otherwise Very Fine, 2¢ local rate, carried outside the mails to Japan.

This cover was addressed to a young Robert Edwin Peary, famed Arctic Explorer, who at the time was a draftsman with the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey.

Navy Dept., 1873, 3¢ ultramarine (O37), tied by fancy violet 4-point star, matching Georgetown, D.C. c.d.s, on cover to a Capt. W.A.T. Maddux, Asst Qtr. Master, U.S. Marine Corps, Philadelphia, docketed 1878 "from sister about…", Fine single 3¢ domestic rate.
Estimate 300 - 400

This cover is noteworthy for three reasons: first, this is the only recorded use of Navy stamps from Georgetown; second, Capt. Maddux apparently illegally supplied his sister with Navy stamps for her personal use; and finally, the cover is an example of the trials being conducted by the Georgetown post office with this distinctive violet cancelling ink.

Benson on board the U.S. Flagship Hartford, c/o Navy Dept., Washington, violet "Carrier, Sep 2" c.d.s. on reverse; 6¢ small corner crease, otherwise Very Fine and most attractive, the additional 7¢ postage made up the 10¢ treaty rate to Brazil.

Navy Dept., 1873, 7¢ ultramarine (O39), violet quartered cork cancel, matching "Washington, D.C., May 14, 1878" c.d.s., on cover to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with a 3¢ green (158) originally postmarked Pikesville, Md. and addressed to W.S. Benson, as previous lot; flap missing, small edge tears, tiny corner repair at bottom right, stamps with few perforation stains, still Fine and quite attractive, the 7¢ Navy made up the 10¢ treaty rate when the cover was forwarded to Brazil.

Many of the great collectors of Officials, such as Ackerman, Hughes and Ehrenberg, never owned a 7¢ Navy cover.

Midshipman William Shepherd Benson, a graduate of the Naval Academy, went on to become Chief of Naval operations and served as such until he retired as an Admiral in 1919.

Navy Dept., 1873, 24¢ 2¢ and 6¢ [strip of 3] (O43, O36, O38), tied by neat crossroads cancel on package front from Washington, D.C. to Benton, Me., printed address label and corner card label from the Navy's Nautical Almanac Office, signed by Superintendent J.H.C. Coffin, stamps and "cover" are fresh and Very Fine, 44¢ printed matter rate (1¢ per 2 oz. for a 5½ lb. parcel).
