Lot 287

British Commonwealth specimens, over 1,100 stamps from the archives of the Goa (Portuguese India) post office department. Included are mainly complete sets issued during the 1900-1959 period by Ascension, Br. Guiana, Ceylon, Dominica, Falkland Is., Iraq, Rhodesia, St. Helena, St. Kitts-Nevis, St. Lucia, Sierra Leone, Tristan da Cunha, and Zanzibar. Most issues up to mid-1948 have been overprinted or perforated "SPECIMEN" by the Crown Agents. Some later issues have been handstamped "COLONIAS" or "ULTRAMAR" locally, while some have a combination of the two. The balance have no markings at all and can only be identified as specimens by the fact that they are still on the Goa post office ledger sheets to which they were affixed as they arrived from the U.P.U. or the Portuguese postal authorities. All are stuck fast to the post office ledger sheets (or portions thereof). Many, particularly the KEVII and KGV issues, have acquired some degree of toning or fading from having spent many years in a tropical climate, and the are a few small flaws, but overall condition is quite reasonable for material this scarce. A rare opportunity.
Estimate 4,000 - 5,000

British Empire collection, several thousand stamps mainly pre-1903 stamps in a Stanley Gibbons Imperial album, by far the strongest country is Great Britain, which is loaded with better stamps from two Penny Blacks through plate number varieties of the 1p #33 and the surface printed issues, we note £1 #124 and 142 among other goodies. The colonies are not quite as strong, though Hong Kong is well represented and throughout the collector managed to acquire some especially nice cancels and unusual used multiples. the album is not in good condition, but the stamps are much better than those usually found in collections of this vintage; truly a premium collection.
