New Brunswick 1851, 3d dark red (1a), pair, wonderful color with large margins on three sides, left stamp touched on one side, dividing scratch in margin between pair and right stamp crossed by filing fold which just cracks the surface, tied by oval grid on folded letter to New York, showing "New Brunswick/VR 1851" c.d.s. in blue and straight line "Paid" handstamp in red adjacent, backstamped "St. John N.B./NO 27 1851", Very Fine and early use of the three pence stamp. SG 2.

New Brunswick 1851, 3d dark red (1a), and 6d olive yellow (2, SG4), both touched on one or two sides, cancelled "26" in oval grid and tied by manuscript "Ford 3" on 1856 envelope from Shediac to Ophir, California redirected to Sacramento, with origin and St. John N.B. (Feb 22) transit c.d.s. on reverse, while the front side shows "New Brunswick" double arc handstamp in blue, "Mount Ophir Cal." (Apr. 7) and "Ophirville/Cal." (11 Apr.) c.d.s. both in red with manuscript "Missent" endorsement, Fine, rare and appealing. SG 2.

New Brunswick 1851, 6d olive yellow (2), with large to ample margins all round except touched at right corner, tied by straight line "Paid" handstamp in red and showing matching "Colonial Express Mail" on 1856 envelope to Vergennes, Vt., "St. John, N.B./Dec 8 "c.d.s. adjacent, with "Favor's Express/Steamer Admiral/Dec 1856" c.d.s. in red on reverse, Very Fine and scarce usage. SG 4.

Colonel Favor had an annual grant to carry the mail from St. John to Boston via Eastport and Portland. The U.S. permitted the mail to be carried free in closed bags over the Montreal-Portland railway.

New Brunswick 1851, 1s bright red violet (3), warm color and characteristic wooly impression, large even margins, tied by oval grid and "Express Mail/St. John/Jul. 27" c.d.s. (with another sharp strike repeated at lower left of cover) on 1853 folded letter sheet to New York "p. 'Admiral'" showing handstruck Paid and "20" in red adjacent, backstamped "St. John New Brunswick" (July 27), addressee's name excised and neatly rewritten (the "20" handstamp therefore also partly painted in), the stamp is Extremely Fine and the cover of great visual appeal, an outstanding cross border single franking paying the double rate. SG 5.

New Brunswick 1851, 1s dull violet, diagonal bisect (4a), rich full color and sharp impression, large to enormous margins showing portion of adjoining stamp, ideally tied by crisply struck "8" in blue oval grid, on 1858 folded letter to Boston, with matching "Chatham N.B./MA 19 1858" double arc origin datestamp and "St. John New Brunswick" transit c.d.s. (Mar. 21) on reverse, the cover slightly refolded at top and small portions of inside trimmed off for appearance sake, Very Fine usage. SG 6a.

New Brunswick Registered letter wrapper receipt, black on green, partly printed formular folded letter to the Postmaster of Presque Isle, Me. via Grand Falls N.B. exchange office (Aug. 15), showing "Upper St. Bazil N.B./15 Aug 70" circular unframed origin datestamp with date inserted by hand, while the inside shows "Presque Isle Me./Aug 19" receiving c.d.s. applied by the postmaster in the allotted space, scarce throwback to the Provincial period, with many postmasters in the Maritime Provinces continuing to use these into the Confederation period until these were outlawed in 1875.
