Prince Edward Island 1861, 6d yellow green, perf. 9 (3), fresh bright color with perforations intact, tied by barred oval grid on 1863 mourning envelope (truncated lower left corner, but with original enclosure) to Boston, Mass. (backstamped July 4), showing "Prince Edward Island/Apr 23 1863" origin c.d.s. (on reverse) as well as an unidentifiable May 5 datestamp, instructional "Not called for" handstamp and pencil "Not known" notation; also the original returned letter wrapper printed formular folded letter from the G.P.O. in Charlottetown in which the letter was returned to the sender, backstamped Prince Edward Island Nov. 28, Very Fine. SG 4.

IRREFUTABLY ONE OF THE FINEST AND MOST UNUSUAL OF THE SIXTEEN RECORDED SIX PENCE COVERS.

Expertization: 1960 R.P.S. Certificate.

The enclosed letter is written by a staunch supporter of the Union inquiring about his brother who had enlisted in the Union Army, been wounded in the Peninsula Campaign, and eventually died while being moved from Harrison's Landing to Fort Monroe.

Prince Edward Island 1862-68, 1d yellow orange on yellowish (4), with fragment of sheet margin at left, perfectly tied by boldly struck "Prince Edward Island/28 Jun 1868" rimless c.d.s. on envelope from Charlottetown to Gloucester, Mass., envelope has flap at back missing and tiny fault at lower right corner, Very Fine one cent circular rate. SG 9.

Prince Edward Island 1862-68, 2d rose-pink, Die I on coarse wove bluish paper, perf. 11½-12 (5 var), two slightly overlapping singles tied by "Charlottetown P.E.I." star duplex on 1868 (Dec. 9) envelope to Minnesota, Very Fine example of the new six pence rate which came into effect on November 1, 1868. SG 28.

Prince Edward Island 1862-68, 3d deep blue (6 var), horizontal pair, a few blunt perforations at top right, nicely cancelled in manuscript on 1864 envelope (small tear at left) to Standish, Me., showing circular "Paid/10" handstamp in red adjacent and "Prince Edward Island/May 12, 1864" origin c.d.s. on reverse, Very Fine. Prince Edward Island 1870, 4½d yellow brown (10), tied by "Charlottetown P.E.I./28 Sep 1871" star duplex on pink envelope to Shepton Mallett, England (Oct. 15) "via New York", carried on the Guion Line packet "Wyoming" which left New York on Oct. 4 and arrived in Queenston Oct. 14 and therefore underpaid 1d stg. for traveling through New York, but not charged, the stamp has perforation defects and small tear because of its application just over the edge of the cover which is lightly age spotted and missing part of the flap, a pleasing example of this rare use of which nine covers are recorded and this is the only one with the star cancellation. SG 32.

Prince Edward Island 1872, 2¢ ultramarine (12), minor perforation faults at top, and 4¢ green (14, SG39) cancelled by barred oval grid on neat 1872 envelope to Troy, N.H. via St. John N.B., showing "Summerside/P.E. Island/18 Oct." c.d.s. adjacent, Very Fine example of the rate change to decimal currency which had taken place on January 1. SG 38.

U.S. 1870, 3¢ green stationery entire (U82), Nov. 17, 1871 usage, cancelled by "Richmond/Ind" duplex in blue, with unframed "10" and crayon "6d" notation adjacent and bearing on reverse Prince Edward Island 6d yellow green compound perforation (S.G. 25) tied by "13" in barred oval, showing accompanying "Charlotte Town" c.d.s. adjacent, the 6d has minute split at foot between perforations, Extremely Fine and noteworthy usage.
