1851, 1¢ blue, type II (7), horizontal strip of three, ample to large margins, cancelled by bold pen squiggles on cover to Sanbornton Bridge, N.H., manuscript "Poolesville Md/ December 27th 1851" in box at top left, additional "5 undercharged" written below strip and just tying it, lengthy original contents signed "Crazy Ned" which mentions trip to Washington, attending sermon with Pres. Fillmore in the audience, seeing "102 faint of the intended Washington Monument" etc.; cover with some wear, strip with light gum wrinkles in left pair, still Very Fine, attractive and scarce small town usage.

Atlantic", manuscript "1/4" (1sh 4p) British due, red "Art-5/ U.S. Pkt." straightline handstamp, reverse with red British and Schiedam datestamps and red "Ongeland/ over Rotterdam" scriptstyle handstamp. Fine and rare, a highly unusual usage and a very early example from Plate One Late.

Sent via British open mail by American packet. The sender attempted to pay only the 3¢ domestic postage and the partial payment was disregarded.

1852, 3¢ dull red (11), margins to slightly in, tied by "Cincinnati O. Jan. 18" c.d.s. on battered cover to a purser aboard the U.S. Brig Bainbridge at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, care of "Robt. Wright & Co. Baltimore Md.", red "Paid" handstamp and magenta manuscript "50", reverse with manuscript "Forwarded by Esliry & Alverys" but no other indication how this was handled, the rate to Brazil was 45¢ by British packet via England; what the Paid 50 represents is not clear but it did reach its destination: there is a large "Answered" written diagonally across the envelope which has clearly suffered over the years, nevertheless an intriguing usage worthy of further study.

Nov. 18" c.d.s. on cover to San Francisco, uncommon manuscript docketing "Rec'd pr 'Golden Age' Dec. 14, 1854 4 P.M."; trivial toning at top edge center, Fine and interesting usage.

Presumably postmarked with the "3 Paid" c.d.s. before the California address was noted. The proper postage was then affixed. Carried on the S.S.
North Star (U.S. Mail S.S. Co.) to Aspinwall where it connected with the Golden Age (Pacific Mail S.S. Co.).

1851-52, 3¢ brownish carmine (11), two singles, margins to slightly in, tied by large Boston "Paid" in grid and boxed "G B/ 1F60c" on March 1857 lilac envelope to Paris, France, bold "8" (decimes due) handstamp and Calais postmark, "Boston Br. Pkt. 11 Mar" exchange c.d.s. and red Liverpool transit, 24 Mar, on reverse, Fine and scarce "three-month period" usage.

This was an overpayment by 1¢ of the 5¢ U.S. inland postage. During "the 3-month period", from January 1 until April 1, 1857, a single-rate letter could be sent from the U.S. to France by British packet for 10¢ less than by American packet. This letter was carried on the Cunard steamer
Niagara, which left Boston on March 11 and arrived in Liverpool on March 24.

Jan. 9" c.d.s., red "New York Am. Pkt. Jan. 12" exchange postmark, manuscript instruction "Per Steamer Arago via New York, Southampton & Havre", faint red French c.d.s. ties left 10¢ pair and bold manuscript "4" collect (there is also a smaller manuscript "30" on back); flap faults and small tear at top, still Fine, an intriguing and colorful franking. This appears to have been incorrectly franked at double the old American Packet rate of 24¢ which had been lowered to 20¢ as of Jan 1, 1851.

A double rate cover on which the sender attempted to pay double the 5¢ shore to ship rate to France by British mail (this rate had ended on April 1). The New York exchange office treated it as unpaid and the letter went by American packet, debiting France at the rate of 9¢ per ½oz.
