1870, 24¢ purple (153), used with 3¢ green (147), quartered cork cancels and tied by one of two strikes red "New 24 York Feb 3" c.d.s. on small cover postmarked "Pottsville Pa. 1 Feb" c.d.s. to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, red "London Paid" transit c.d.s. also ties 3¢ stamp, printed address to the U.S.S. Lancaster care of U.S. Consul, backstamped Rio, March 18; small repaired nick at upper right, Very Fine.

Expertization: clear 1982 P.F. Certificate.

The rate to Brazil by British mails via Southampton was 28¢ per ½oz. This 1¢ underpayment, however, was apparently accepted without penalty.

1870, 24¢ purple (153), single tied by segmented cork cancel on 3¢ green entire to New York, 3¢ with matching cancel, clear "Battle Creek Mich. Mar. 27" c.d.s., manuscript "Forwarded to Hong Kong, China British mail via Southampton" in the sender's hand, three pen strokes deleting original address (included one also tying the 24¢) and manuscript "Hong Kong/ China" in someone else's hand, clear "New York Apr. 14" c.d.s. and red Apr. 16 exchange c.d.s. with "24" credit and London transit, large "Unclaimed" written vertically at left and red crayon "1d", reverse with June 1873 Hong-Kong Marine-Sorter postmark and an additional Hong Kong postmark dated Jan. 12, 1874, original 1873 enclosure from Battle Creek sheds some light on this peculiar usage: "The news that this missive contains will probably be stale enough by the time it reaches you for I am going to try and send it around the world I think I shall succeed in my undertaking if some good American in China will have the kindness to forward it to the address which I will give in full on the last page of this sheet. If there should be such a thing as a dead-letter office in China this will probably arrive at Laramie all right" (the address Laramie City, Wyoming Terr.); entire with small opening tears at top and piece out of indicia, stamp with small corner crease, otherwise Fine.

1873, 30¢ gray black (165), used with 24¢ purple (153) and tied by circles of wedges on 1875 cover from Boston to Ahmednuggur, India via Brindisi, "Boston Paid Aug 10", "London Paid 21 Au 75" with manuscript "220/2" and "2" rates all in red, backstamped Sea Post Office, Sept 3, and Ahmednuggur, Sept 16, a choice Very Fine double rate cover.

As of August 1, 1875, the rate to India by British mails via Brindisi was lowered from 28¢ to 27¢ per ½oz. Thus, the example offered here is the correctly franked double rate cover.

1883, 2¢ red brown (210), tied by neat target cancel, perfectly struck day of issue "Hannibal, N.Y. Oct. 1 1883" double circle alongside, on yellow cover to Buffalo, N.Y. with attorney's corner card; skillfully mended at left with a new flap added, fresh Very Fine appearance, only 30-40 First Day Covers of #210 are believed to exist.

Co., Nehawka, Nebr., Aug 16, 1930 to clients in Seattle, Wash. and Modesto, Cal., both were undeliverable and were returned to sender at the 3rd class printed circular rate of 1½¢, one is marked "Postage Due 1½ cent" the other "1 cent", the 1½¢ Nebr. was applied on arrival in Nehawka, a Very Fine and rare pair of cards.
