[Italian States] Papal States 1852, registered folded letter sheet from Rome to Livorno, with 1b green-grey and 7b horizontal strip of five, large to ample margins, one stamp barely touched at top, pen cancelled, with red "Assicurata" and "Roma Affrancata" handstamps, manuscript "Per consegna" + "1" in manuscript, light horizontal filing creases through two stamps. Fine and spectacular triple rate franking representing 24 baj. postage + 12 baj. registration fee. Sassone 2, 8; €6,000 ($6,600).

[Italian States] Papal States 1852, folded letter from Rome to Spoleto, with 2b green-olive, large to ample margins, tied by barred grill, "Roma 20 Nov " c.d.s. and Italian Postage Due 10c yellow-ocher pair tied by Spoleto c.d.s. Very fine and unusual. Sassone 3A, N1a; €1,325 ++ ($1,460).

The Italian government did not recognize Papal rates, and the letters were taxed, with Postage Due stamps applied on arrival. These were usually uncancelled, and it is, therefore, rare to find them tied on cover.

[Italian States] Papal States 1854, folded letter sheet from Ferrentino to Rome, with 1b green-grey and 3b bister orange, oily impression, marginal strips of five (2) and strip of three, cancelled by straight-line "Ferrentino", backstamped "Roma 13 Nov" in red, stamps with large to cut into margins and a few creases from filing folds which are to be expected on a franking of this magnitude. An extremely rare, remarkable, and possibly unique franking. One of the highlights of the collection. Sassone 2, 4e.

Japan Early 1880s (?) short paid cover, sent from Tokyo to Kitagata with 1879 2s dark violet (#69), negative white cross cancel on reverse side, front side of envelope with red boxed postmark indicating letter has insufficient postage, the post office applied to the back side a top margin block of four of 1874 ½s brown, syll.1 (#32) and cancelled each stamp with a black boxed "lack of prepayment postmark, cover open three sides for display and there are some minor faults from opening plus 2s single is missing a corner from opening, still Fine and scarce usage.

Liberia 1846 stampless folded letter, datelined Monrovia, March 22nd, from James Eden, an early American missionary to Liberia, to a Walter Lourie in New York introducing one Mr. Semans who could give Lourie "all the information you need in relation to Africa". The letter was hand-carried to New York where it was placed in the mails and postmarked light strike red "New York 2 cts. May 12" drop rate c.d.s., Fine-Very Fine.

James Eden was an African American, part of a large African Methodist congregation in Charleston, S.C. that was forced by local political sentiment to disband. He and many of the members of the congregation emigrated to Liberia in 1833.
