1922, 15¢ gray, 25¢ yellow green and 50¢ lilac (566 (2), 568, 570), all tied by magenta November 11, 1922 Washington, D.C. registry cancels on a 12½" x 9½" registered special delivery First Day Cover; in addition, there are fourteen other stamps: #537 (2), 548 (block), 549 (pair), 550, 557, 563 and C1-3 tied by mute oval cancels; patent attorney’s corner card and stationery insert which lists the stamps (complete issues for the previous four years); while expertly restored at the edges and corner since it was last sold, none of the repairs affect either the stamps or the auxiliary markings. THE 20¢ SAN FRANCISCO FIRST DAY COVER RANKS AMONG THE RAREST OF THE MIDDLE VALUES FROM THIS SERIES AND, WITH A BLOCK OF FOUR, THIS COVER IS BELIEVED TO BE UNIQUE.

The reason for the small number of San Francisco FDCs is the city’s distance from the east coast, where most of the servicers were based. The Post Office announced the new 20¢t stamp only three days before its date of issue, leaving little time to get requests for first day cancellations from the east to San Francisco.

Though it has been commonly accepted that five Oakland First Day Covers were produced, only two have been sold at auction and none of the other three has ever been seen by collectors.
