Worldwide Topicals, "The Lion", an international award-winning thematic collection mounted on 80 exhibition pages plus many items not yet mounted. In the owner’s own words the exhibit "attempts to trace philatelically man’s elevation of the Lion from beast to presence in human activities, leading to the feline with anthropomorphic features." The collection includes all forms in which the lion has been used philatelically, from the Mulready envelopes to stylized heraldic symbols in early stamp design and right up through modern African "photographic" portrayals. You will find mint stamps, proofs and covers including pictorial cancellations, meters and advertising covers. Among the better items to be found are British East Africa 1898 50r Specimen overprint; Great Britain Mulready letter sheet die essay of front panel without denomination (large sealed tear), two different "Downey head" die essays and an imperf 1p paper trial; Iran 4s & 8s "Barre" compound essay, block of 10 containing five of each value se-tenant and imperf between; K.U.T. 1954 20c imperf pair (107b); North Borneo 1911 $5 & $10 (156-157) printed in green & black in a composite Waterlow & Sons sample sheet of 9; Rhodesia 1898 1p rose imperf pair (60d); Sweden 10ö tête-bêche (118a) strip of 4; Zanzibar 1904 5r (93) die proof in black. A marvelous collection that would take many years to duplicate.
