Lot 1248

Fort Smith, Arkansas Territory, folded letter datelined "Ft. Smith, 28 Mar 22" to the Quartermaster General, Thomas S. Jesup in Washington, postmark red "Natz M1, Apr 24" c.d.s. with manuscript "f" for free on Official Army Business. F.-V.F. Cover was mailed from Natchez as there was no post office established at Ft. Smith until 1828. Articulate letter is from Fort Commander, Lt. Col. Abram Wooley, telling his views on various Indian tribes, in part "… it is said there are one hundred thousand Indians… west of the Mississippi, if this is true… ninety seven thousand of them are cowards" Wooley was a signatory to a treaty with the Mikah Tribe in 1825.

(SEP(16.", perfectly struck red straightline with red manuscript "Sh 26" rate on 18oz. folded letter to Philadelphia datelined "Kingston, Jamaica, 16th Angt, 1802", fresh and Extremely Fine, The "Sh 26" rate is believed by the owner to be unique. The letter originally included an enclosure, accounting for the double rate of 20¢ for inland postage from New Castle to Philadelphia.

Baltimore, Md., red c.d.s. on 1810 folded letter to George Town, Del., red manuscript rate "10" altered to "12½" [Georgetown being just over the 90 mile limit of the 10¢ rate], black manuscript "Due 4½" apparently applied in Georgetown, Very Fine and early use of the word "Due" [possibly the earliest recorded]. The 4½¢ due makes up the 17¢ rate for distances of 150-300 but justification for such a rate is not apparent.

(Canada), red manuscript "18¾" rate, sender's instruction "Via Derby Line" (Vermont), red "Stanstead, L.C., Jan 6, 1840" Canadian exchange office c.d.s. with manuscript rate breakdown "U.S. 11½ + 4½ = 1/4" applied, probably at Derby Line, minor toning and edge wear, otherwise a Very Fine and exceptional rating. The rate of 18¾¢ was the U.S. "to the line" rate, The Canadian equivalent was 11½d, 4½d was due for Canadian postage, for a total of 16d or 1sh4d.

"Charleston, Oct. 28*", mostly bold straight line handstamp on 1793 folded cover to Philadelphia with red manuscript "25" rate (faded), forwarded to Edenton (N.C., N.Y. or Ohio) with ms "forwd" and "22/47", somewhat aged, Fine and scarce early example of forwarded mail, 22¢ was the rate for a distance of 350-450 miles, 25¢ for over 450 miles.
