1847, 5¢ red brown, marvelous red design on patriotic cover (L751) with 3¢ rose (65) pen cancelled and tied by rimless 1862 Annapolis, Md. c.d.s., Very Fine; also includes an interesting 4-page letter on "matching" letterhead with purple design similar to L749, datelined Camp Harris, written by a soldier to his father over the period of Feb 10 - 14, detailing camp life.

1860, 24¢ gray lilac (37), on eagle & flag patriotic coveright (a similar lot. L-2546) to Germany, tied by one of two strikes "Lima, O., Oct 3, 1861" c.d.s. black "23, New-York Am. Pkt., Oct 12" transit c.d.s., manuscript rates "45" and "45" charged to "12¾", backstamped Aachen and Rudolstadt, F.-V.F. ex-Waterhouse. Ashbrook's opinion (on reverse) is that this is an example of Old Stamps Not Recognized. A more plausible explanation for the rate is that the 24¢ underpaid the Prussian Closed Mail rate by 4¢ therefore the cover was treated as unpaid. This stamp was not demonetized in Ohio until November 1st.

1861 Patriotic cover to Beirut, Syria, "Liberty" with flag (L-2178) with manuscript "Paid 20c Am", added to a Rev. J.L. Lyons and apparently carried outside the mails, docketed on reverse "Rec'd at Sidon, July 18, 1861, dated June 3"; minor toning and edge wear, Fine and no doubt unique.

Jessie and John Fremont, illustrated campaign cover with 3¢ dull red (11) tied by light Richmond, Vt. c.d.s., minor edge flaws at bottom, Very Fine and rare. A similar cover in the Bischel sale was listed as the only recorded example. Jessie Fremont was the first woman to become involved in her husband's presidential campaign.

"Prof. Lowe’s Union Balloon", patriotic cover with inscription "Gens. McDowell & McClellan’s Aerial Reconnaisance", 3¢ rose (65) tied by blue "Alexandria, Va. Nov 10, 1862" c.d.s., opened a bit roughly at right with tape stain, small sealed tear at bottom, Fine and rare. Said to be the finer of only two recorded examples.

"Union Tabernacle", religious patriotic cover featuring a large tent revival meeting with "Union Tabernacle" on flags atop the tent, alongside is a quote from Pslams, 3¢ rose (65) tied by "Norristown, Pa., Oct 10, 1861" c.d.s.; repaired, Very Fine appearance. A very rare and perhaps unique design.

1861 U.S. 3¢ dull red (26), tied on Confederate patriotic cover, 7-star flag in red, white, and blue (Dietz) by Grenada, Mi. c.d.s., May 27 (1861), four days prior to the prohibition of the use of U.S. stamps, addressed to Mrs. Kate Wade, Port Gibson, Mi., stamp slightly damaged and cover faintly toned, as is typical, Fine. ex-Matz.

Lot 1474

1863, 2¢ black (73), average single cork canceled and tied by "Boston, Mass. Feb. 15" c.d.s. on small mourning cover addressed locally to Rev. Samuel J. May, manuscript "$25.-enclosed & acknowledged" in the hand of the sender, enclosed black-bordered carte-de-viste with handwritten "Twenty five dollars for Mr. Garrison from (printed) Mrs. A.G. Farwell", Very Fine. Judging from the "& acknowledged" quite possibly a money letter.

Rev. Mary and William L. Garrison were both active abolitionists, Mary participated in the Underground Railroad, Garrison was the leader of the American Anti-Slavery Society. This was apparently a donation to Mr. Garrison's cause.

Lot 1475

1873, 7¢ orange vermilion, 3¢ rose (65) tied by target cancel on cover postmarked Lynn, Mass. Aug 26 (1865), addressed "Capt. Algernon Draper, 2dBrig. 3d Div. 25th A.C., 36th U.S.C. Troops, Brazos Santiago, Texas"; corner torn in opening, Fine. The 36th U.S. Colored Troop was part of the 25th Army Corps, an all-colored corps. Draper, who served under is brother Alonzo, a General, was mustered into the 36th as a Lieutenant in March, 1864 and promoted to Captain in February 1865. The 25th Corps was stationed along the Rio Grande in May 1865, as part of a buildup against French forces in Mexico. Alonzo was killed at Brazos Santiago on Sept 3, 1965. The 25th Corps was disbanded in January, 1866.

3¢ rose (65), vertical pair paying the 6¢ ship rate tied by bold circle of wedges cancel on cover postmarked "New York Jun 22, 1863" c.d.s. (illegible date contemporaneously clarified with pen), to "Dr. Grenville M. Weeks. Str Florida., North Atlantic Blockd'g Squadron, Off Wilmington N. Carolina, care Captain Carr, Storeship Badger off Beaufort, N. Carolina; stamps slightly damaged from edge placement, Fine. Weeks had been the assistant surgeon aboard the Union ironclad Monitor when it sank a year prior to this.
