Lot 1870

Hawaii "Honolulu, Oahu, May 5, 1837", dateline with additional "Per. Ship Hamilton via Manila & China" on folded blue letter addressed to W.S.W. Ruschenberger M.D., Surgeon U.S. Naval at Philadelphia, Pa., red "New York SHIP Jan 16" (1838) c.d.s. with manuscript 12½ rating at upper right, letter was in transit for eight months to New York where placed in the U.S. mails, Fine and interesting content.

The enclosure is quite specific in condemming the numbers and fanaticism of the missionaries in the Islands. As an example: "The Catholic priests formerly sent from here have come back again, and are still ordered to leave. The spirit from which this order springs is the True Missionary Spirit of Intolerance…"

William S. W. Ruschenberger was a naval surgeon from August 10, 1826 until his retirement in September 4, 1869. He served many posts including fleet surgeon of the East India squadron in 1835-37 and 1847-50, the Pacific sqaudron in 1854-57, and later the Mediterranean squadron in 1860-61. In between cruises he was on duty at Philadelphia.

Hawaii "Oahu, April 7, 1838", dateline on folded letter addressed to Bristol, R.I., sent via Vera Cruz, Mexico with "Franqueado Vera Cruz Julio 31" c.d.s. on reverse, address leaf with light strike of red "New Orleans Aug 28" c.d.s. with matching "SHIP" handstamp, manuscript "27" rating, minor internal fold splitting and edge wear, Very Fine, letter is rated 27 for the 25¢ rate for over 400 miles plus 2¢ ship letter captain's fee.

Interesting enclosure concerning ship arrivals and various problems. Letter reports various ships at Oahu, Maui and Lahaina Roads, and also mentions the scarcity of food on the Island of Hawaii due to drought. Letter notes the arrival of whaling ships and list by name a number of the ships anchored at Maui.

The Hawaiian postmark indicates that the Hawaii and U.S. postage was fully prepaid. The 8 rating was ship captain's fee of 2¢ plus U.S. 6¢ postage for prepaid over 3000 miles.

The Hawaiian postmark indicates that only the postage shore to ship in Hawaii was paid, and that the U.S. postage was collect. The ship's captain collected his fee of 2¢ when the letter was turned over to the San Francisco postmaster, who then applied the San Francisco markings. The 12 rating was ship captain's fee of 2¢ plus U.S. 10¢ postage for collect over 3000 miles. The ship
Hunter was out of New Bedford, whaling in the North Pacific.
