Philip Schuyler was appointed one of the four Major Generals of the Continental army by the Continental Congress in June 1775. He served until he was replaced in 1777 and finally resigned his commission in April 1779. In 1780, he was selected to the New York State Senate, and later appointed as one of the first two United States Senators for New York in 1788.

Clearly, the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia was receiving all the attention.

Starting in 1783 until 1798, Philadelphia only used a Franklin mark and did not use a city name postmark. This is one of only three recorded exceptions during this 15 year period that have been documented.

At this time Washington was a private citizen. Normally a free frank was granted to a position rather than a person. Because of the volume of mail Washington received, the Continental Congress, in 1782, had authorized him the franking privilege personally. THE EARLIEST RECORDED LETTER FROM NORTHWEST TERRITORY IN PRIVATE HANDS.

Starting in July 1788, Colonel Sproat provided the only courier service to and from Marietta. This letter was carried on the second trip.

Northwest Territory was formed with the passing of the Ordinance of 1787. The first Northwest Territory settlement was founded in April of 1788 and was called Marietta. The settlement was on the east bank of the Muskingum River where it flows into the Ohio, laid out to a point across from Fort Harmar on the west bank of the river.

AN EARLY, CROSS-BORDER FUR TRADE COVER CARRIED VIRTUALLY THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE GREAT LAKES AND ST. LAWRENCE RIVER SYSTEM.

Provenance: Steinhart

The letter was carried outside the mails by canoe express across the Great Lakes. Grand Portage was the main North West Company post at the east end of the Grand Portage Route from Lake Superior to Red River at the western end of Lake Superior. The letter is addressed to Donald "Mad" McKay, who was employed in 1779 by John Ross, a minor North West Company trader on Assiniboine River. Being in American territory, Grand Portage was later abandoned in 1800-1801 and replaced by a new post further north at Fort William.
